The PAB will build its new offices in the old “Tras” building

The PAB will build its new offices at the port of Palma in the old office buildings of the company Trasmediterránea, popularly known as the "Tras" building. The construction could start in the second half of 2009, with an execution period of fifteen months and an estimated budget of 18 million euros. This will involve the relocation of its current headquarters to expand and adapt to its future needs. The future building will be built on an area of 2,500 square meters and will consist of two floors and a basement for parking and storage. It will conserve the existing stone façade, located at the main entrance of Moll Vell, for its historical significance. The rest of the property will be newly constructed with steel, glass and aluminium.The interior distribution will consist of a spacious courtyard with work zones distributed around the perimeter. The ground floor will have a porch garden, which will be used mainly as a reception area. The first and second floors are intended for offices, waiting rooms, training rooms and general work areas. The project includes measures to protect the environment, with thermal and acoustic insulation and energy conservation, as well as, access to telecommunications services, audiovisuals and the media. It also contemplates strategies to improve accessibility and ways of dealing with architectural barriers. With the move to the old "Tras" building, which was built early in the nineteen thirties, the current headquarters of the PAB will be converted into a building dedicated to corporate and institutional activities, such as, exhibitions, archives and meetings of the Governing Council, as well as, acts related to the port, such as, conferences, symposiums, seminars and forums.

Construction of new passenger terminal begins in Alcudia

The PAB initiated today, the construction of the new passenger terminal in the Port of Alcudia, with a budget allocation of 12,947,265.00 €. The signing of a joint venture agreement between the PAB and winners of the bid, the UTE, formed by Ferrovial Agromán and Construcciones Llull Sastre, marked the official start of construction. The project has an estimated deadline for completion of twelve months. The building will have an area of approximately 3,600 square meters, with a height that will not exceed twelve meters. In addition, it will have a parking area for cars and buses. The passenger terminal will be located on the recent extension of the Poniente docks: an area of 27,500 square meters gained over water, in which the PAB has invested about six million euros. The project will also include the installation of fixed and movable gangways to connect the terminal with ships, providing direct access for embarking and disembarking passengers.

The Port of Palma beats record for cruise ship stopovers in a single month

Today the Port of Palma has reached a new record of 84 cruise ship stopovers in the same month, surpassing the record high of 80 stopovers registered since October, 1999. The month of May closed with a 9% increase over the same month in 2007, when a total of 77 cruise ships passed through the Port of Palma. Adding to the fact that May and October are the two busiest months of the season in the ports of the Balearic Islands, with regard to such vessels, on May 18, the Oceanic and the Grand Mistral made unscheduled visits to Palma’s facilities, due to the fact that they had been forced to suspend their stopovers in the port of Tunisia. If the program for this year is fulfilled, the Port of Palma will break another historical record: 500 stopovers by cruise ships in the same year. The current forecast is for an increase of 5% in cruise ship stopovers compared with 2007, when the port of Palma received for the first time, over one million cruise ships in a single season

The PAB reconstructs the landing pier on the Isla del Rey in the Port of Maó

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands has completed the reconstruction of the old pier on the Isla del Rey, located in the Port of Maó. The cost of the reform was approximately 50,000 euros and consisted of reinforcing the quay, which is 14.5 metres long and has an average width of 6.5 metres, and repaving the surface. The border was raised to 90 centimetres above sea level to facilitate berthing of more modern vessels

The Governing Council informed about plan to extend Port of Palma

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (PAB) was informed today in detail about the Master Plan for Infrastructures for the Port of Palma, which provides for exterior expansion and remodelling of its port facilities. The plan is undergoing its final draft and the finalization of the Strategic Environmental Assessment Study. The project includes a new external dock which, with the acquisition of greater surface area and mooring lines, will improve the distribution of merchandise and passenger traffic, cruise ship traffic, docking for recreational vessels and boat reparation facilities, among other activities. In addition, areas near the urban core could provide the basis of a port-city project being developed with the City Council of Palma

Pedestrian walkway for Dique del Oeste, Port of Palma

The PAB will shortly begin improvements on the pedestrian walkway on the exterior breakwater of the Dique del Oeste. This project, valued at 300 thousand euros, involves reforming 800 metres of the breakwater and providing it with a suitable lighting system designed to minimize light pollution. Access will be open to the public, except when it is considered dangerous due to sea conditions. The installation will take two months to complete and will begin in approximately one month

Ocibar to operate inside pier of the Port of Ibiza

The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (ABS) has chosen the company Ocibar S.A. for the exploitation of the moorings of the inner pier of Ibiza harbor and deal with the corresponding concession, in accordance with the proposal of the Technical Committee responsible for reporting on the bids submitted to the contest. The rental fee forOcibar S.A. will be 110,853.44 euros and the investment will be 303,529.94 euros. The objective of the undertaking is the two year operation of two floating docks, each one with a length of 75 metres and a width of 2.5 metres. Both are located in the iterior basin of the port of Ibiza and will occupy a total water surface area of nine thousand square meters. Tthe operation will provide management for pleasure boat moorings, water and electricity provision, child care, garbage collection and other services

Promotion in Miami of low season cruises

A delegation from the Balearic Islands, headed by the chairman of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB), Francesc Triay and composed of various cruise ship agents and representatives of tourism from Ibiza, was present at the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention in Miami, from 11 to 13 March, to promote the Balearic ports as some of the most solid destinations in the Mediterranean. The primary objective of the representatives from the islands was to attract more cruising activity during the winter season, as the prospects for high season are already very good. In this regard, the APB managed to set up contacts with Royal Caribbean for a cruise from this company to make a stopover in Palma over the next winter season. In addition, the delegation entered into negotiations with AIDA Cruises to make Palma a permanent centre for the company's operations in the Mediterranean

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands will construct a new 16 million euro passenger terminal in the port of Alcudia. The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) has opened the competition for the construction of the new passenger terminal in the port of Alcudia, with an estimated budget of 15.908.496.36 euros. The project will include the construction of two fixed footbridges for boarding and disembarking passengers.The building will have a surface area of approximately 3,600 square meters, with a height of under twelve meters. In addition, it will have a parking zone for cars and buses. The passenger terminal will be located on the recent extension of the Muelles del Poniente (Western Docks): a surface area of 27,500 square meters into which the PAB has invested six million euros.The terminal will be distributed over a ground floor and two upper floors and will be adapted according to the related architectural standards. Boarding and disembarking zones for passengers will be separate and these activities will be carried out via the fixed footbridges that will connect the building to the docks. The building will also house a zone for invoicing baggage, shipping agents offices, a cafeteria and a restaurant, among other services.Environmental measures will be anticipated in order to obtain the rational use of energy in the building. The project includes plans for implementing heating and illumination systems, among other operations, which will optimize the use of natural light and solar energy.

PAB will build two new berths in the port of Palma for cruise ships of over 300 metres in length Palma de Mallorca, December 5, 2007. The Port Authority Balearic Islands (PAB) presented today, the project for the construction of a new pier at the western end of the existing docks of Poniente in the Port of Palma, which will provide dockage services for two large vessels, mainly cruise ships. The proposed construction will make it possible to dock four vessels of great length in this zone of the port. Specifically, the existing piers will be extended by about 50 meters and two new berths of 380 meters will be created. It is anticipated that this project will be completed during the current legislature with a budget of approximately 23 million euros. The port of Palma has received a total of 1,043,633 cruise ship passengers from January to November 2007, which represents an increase of 13 percent compared to the same time last year

The traffic of passenger tourists grows in the Balearic Islands

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (PAB) registered an increase of the 25 percent in the number of passenger tourists arriving to the islands in the first semester of 2007. In total, 446,647 passengers arrived to the Balearic Islands by cruise ship, up until the 30th of June, as opposed to 357,270 passengers who registered during the same period of the previous year. In relation to the ports, Mahon led in growth with an increase of 57 percent and a total of 36,656 passengers. This strong increase was due, in part, to the weekly scheduling of several of the ships during the high season, as is the case of the “Sea Princess“, which makes stops at the Port of Mahon every Sunday. The Port of Palma showed an increase of 23 percent, while Ibiza registered a rise of 18 percent, changing the negative tendency of last year’s decrease in cruise ship passengers. With respect to the number of ships arriving to the islands, the overall growth was 24 percent, and again, Mahon, with an increase of no less than the 73 percent, was the port with the most significant the ascent. As to passenger traffic on regular lines, the ports of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands registered, during the first six months of this year (2007), an overall increase of 7 percent

Work finished on docks of Alcudia

Construction work on the Poniente docks in the Port of Alcudia has been completed. The project consisted of expanding the esplanade toward the northwest and gaining approximately 27,500 square meters of surface area over water. It will give the docks a new line of dockage, with five meters draught, for regular passenger and freight traffic, as well as a pier for local traffic and includes the necessary dredging operations of the new access channel. The project carried out by U.T.E. Dragados and Llabrés Feliu, contemplated the area of the esplanade, which in effect will become a functional extension of the existing one, to be considered for commercial use, intended primarily as a parking facility for semi- trailers and other ro-ro traffic. The dredging work included both the trench for the foundation of the docks, as well as the entry channel to them. On the dredging platforms, in the area of the docks, a supporting structure was installed in order to achieve a better distribution of tensions above ground. Above it, the concrete dock wall was constructed. The work was completed in the estimated time and the final budget came to approximately six million euros
