APB unveils the Cala Corb footbridge to improve the connection between the port of Maó and Es Castell

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) today inaugurated the new footbridge that connects Cala Corb with the en Pons dock, in the port of Maó. The event was presided over by the director of the APB, Toni Ginard, the president of the Menorca Island Council, Adolfo Vilafranca, and the mayor of Es Castell, who highlighted the importance of the improved connection between the municipality and the port and expands the services for the users of the port facilities.

The new infrastructure allows for continuity of the pedestrian route between Cala Corb and the en Pons dock, overcoming the natural barrier that the cliff had previously represented. At the same time, the project has made it possible to install new pontoons with capacity for 67 small sports boats, which will be managed directly by the APB, contributing to increasing the supply of moorings in the port of Maó and streamlining the organisation of port activities.

The unveiling took place after its opening had to be postponed due to landslides on the adjacent cliff earlier this year. With the aim of ensuring user safety, the Balearic Islands Port Authority carried out the preliminary work of cleaning, remediation and shoring of the rocky slope, which have allowed the footbridge to be put into service for the summer season.

During the event, Toni Ginard highlighted that "this initiative represents a significant improvement for both port users and the public, as it strengthens the integration between the port and Es Castell and provides new, much-demanded moorings." He also stressed that "the decision to postpone the opening was based solely on safety criteria, because our priority was to ensure that the footbridge could be put into service with all the necessary assurances."

The president of the Menorca Island Council, Adolfo Vilafranca, highlighted that "through this project we are bringing the port even closer to the citizens. The port of Maó is our great maritime façade and we must continue working to make it a space that is increasingly integrated with the municipalities, more accessible and also more respectful of the environment." Vilafranca expressed his gratitude for "the commitment of the Balearic Port Authority to make this project a reality and the collaboration maintained with the Es Castell City Council. It is a good example of how, when administrations work together, we can do the work that improves people's daily lives and the environment."

For his part, the mayor of Es Castell, Lluís Camps, expressed the municipality's satisfaction with the commissioning of this new infrastructure. "Today is a very important day for the residents and visitors of Es Castell, as we can finally count on this new, long-awaited connection between the en Pons dock and Cala Corb. This pedestrian walkway gives added value to our municipality, as it allows visitors to explore the seafront in a completely safe, accessible and pleasant way, enriching the experience of enjoying our port."

The preliminary work performed on the rocky slope has involved an investment of 40,000 euros. Once the summer season is over, the APB will resume work with the execution of the definitive cliff consolidation project, a larger-scale intervention aimed at reinforcing the area's stability and preventing future landslides.

The construction of the pontoons for sports boats in Cala Corb, which forms part of the new footbridge, has meant a final modified investment of 3.4 million euros. With this initiative, the APB completes a strategic project for the port of Maó that expands the berthing capacity for small vessels, improves pedestrian connectivity and advances the integration of the port with its urban environment, offering safer, more accessible and more functional facilities for citizens and port users alike.

The APB launches a tender to manage charter moorings on the seafront promenade of the port of Palma

In its most recent meeting, the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) has approved the opening of a public tender to award the management and operation, under an administrative concession, of mooring berths for charter boats located on the Mediterranean pontoon in the port of Palma. The concession will be granted for a maximum of eight years.

The facility occupies an approximate area of 21,000 square meters of port in the public domain, comprising approximately 19,000 square meters of water surface and nearly 2,000 square meters of land surface. Currently, the dock serves 61 recreational boats, whose continuity must be guaranteed during the future concession.

The tender will allow for the selection of the proposal that offers the best conditions for the management of these facilities, with the aim of ensuring efficient service, adequate maintenance of the infrastructure and management in accordance with the public interest.

The concession will include the comprehensive management of the marina, with the mandatory provision of mooring management services and the supply of water and power to vessels. In addition, the bids may incorporate complementary services related to nautical activity that contribute to improving the attention and quality of service provided to users.

With this tender, the APB continues to moving forward with a management model based on public tenders, transparency and continuous improvement of port services, guaranteeing the efficient use of the public domain and a quality array of nautical services at the port of Palma.

Green light for the Special Plan that will shape the future of the port of Ibiza

The Special Plan for the port of Ibiza has passed a new milestone in its official processing after its initial approval by the Governing Board of Vila City Council, once the submissions presented during the public consultation process of its previous version were incorporated, which involved substantial amendments to the document.

The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) has prioritised the processing of this urban planning instrument in recent years, pushing its technical development and maintaining close coordination with the various agencies involved, aware that its approval is essential to carry out a large part of the strategic investments planned for the port of Ibiza.

With this step, the Special Plan completes a key stage of its passage through the official procedures and is now sent to the General Directorate of Urban Harmonisation and Environmental Assessment of the Government of the Balearic Islands for the preparation of the corresponding strategic environmental report.

The final approval of the Special Plan, which must also include the required reports from Ibiza's Regional Government Body, the General Coastal Agency, the APB and State Ports, is fundamental for the development of the strategic actions set out in the APB's investment plan for the port of Ibiza.

More than 104 million euros for the port

The Balearic Islands Port Authority has drawn up an ambitious investment plan for the port of Ibiza, with a total budget allocation of €104.31 million for the period 2026–2029. This initiative represents a firm commitment to modernising infrastructure, improving transport links and moving towards a more sustainable and efficient port model that is better integrated with the city.

Among the most significant initiatives is the development of the Ibosim seafront promenade, conceived as a project that will transform the area and will involve public participation, as well as improvements to road access to the Botafoc area to reduce traffic congestion.

Work is also planned on the Botafoc breakwater and various quays, which is already underway, as well as the construction and upgrading of key elements of infrastructure such as the dry dock, new car parks and the future Ibiza–la Savina ferry terminal.

The investment programme also incorporates important actions aimed at environmental sustainability, including the implementation of OPS (Onshore Power Supply) systems, which will allow the supply of electrical energy to ships during their stay in port and significantly reduce air pollution and acoustic emissions. Similarly, the modernisation of basic utility networks, such as the drinking water supply network, is planned.

Taken together, these actions will strengthen the port's operational capacity, improve the quality of services provided, and contribute to greater port-city integration.

Timeline of the Special Plan

Work on the Special Plan for the port of Ibiza began in March 2018 through a technical commission made up of representatives from the Balearic Islands Port Authority and Ibiza City Council.

The first initial approval of the document took place in December 2023 and the second in May 2025. Following each of these milestones, the Plan was submitted to public consultation, incorporating modifications derived from the submissions to the proposed land use plan.

The initial approval now agreed constitutes the third agreement of this type within the procedure and allows the official process to continue by sending it to the regional environmental body to issued the Strategic Environmental Report, a step prior to obtaining the necessary sectoral reports and the final approval of the document.

Throughout this process, the APB has maintained the Special Plan as one of its strategic priorities for Ibiza, commissioning the necessary technical work to expedite its processing and to facilitate coordination between agencies. The entry of the document into its environmental phase represents a significant step forward in providing the port with the necessary urban planning framework to allow the planned investments to be carried out and to confidently address the challenges of mobility, sustainability and growth in the coming years.

The Special Plan constitutes the urban planning tool for ports of general interest to the State and aims to coordinate the powers of the various agencies over the port space, providing the necessary framework for the development of the projects that will define the future evolution of the port of Ibiza.
