Extensive safety operation in the port of Palma after a lorry fire on board the ship Golden Bridge

A fire broke out in a lorry in the hold of the ship Golden Bridge, owned by the GNV shipping company, which was sailing on the Barcelona-Palma route, and was contained during the crossing and finally extinguished on arrival at the port of Palma. The flames did not affect the passenger deck of the ship.

On the ship's arrival at the port of Palma, the safety protocol for this type of incident was activated, with the coordination of the relevant agencies and emergency response teams.

A total of 169 passengers (155 adults, 10 children and 4 babies) and 46 crew members were travelling on board. In total, 15 people required medical assistance: 13 due to smoke inhalation, one on account of a diabetes-related issue and one suffering from a headache. Of these, 13 were classified as minor and two as less serious.

As for the RO-RO cargo, the vessel was carrying 68 lorries and 52 vehicles, including cars, motorbikes and camper vans.

Disembarkation operations went smoothly and safely, both for passengers and vehicles.

The operation involved personnel from the Balearic Islands Port Authority, Emergency Services, Guardia Civil, the Harbour Master’s Office (with three inspectors and the harbour master), the National Police, Palma Fire Brigade and Sea Rescue, as well as the port services of pilots and mooring personnel.

As for the emergency services mobilised, four firefighting vehicles, two fire engines, five medical ambulances and two rapid intervention vehicles were involved.

The Balearic Islands Port Authority is grateful for the coordination and rapid action of all the teams and services involved, which enabled the incident to be managed effectively and ensured the safety of the general public.

The APB regulates the service of supplying liquid fuels by tankers

The Board of Management of the Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) has agreed to approve a regulation for the provision of a commercial service for the supply of conventional petroleum-derived liquid fuels to ships, by means of tanker vehicles, in the ports of Palma, Alcúdia, Mahón, Ibiza and La Savina.

This service is essential for maritime activity, as it allows the supply of fuel to ships operating in ports in the Balearic Islands. The supply will be carried out by means of tanker vehicles, which shall deliver fuel alongside ships at berth when, for technical or operational reasons, it is not possible to do so by means of fixed facilities.

The service will be provided within the port service areas of each port and will have all the technical means necessary to ensure safe, efficient and environmentally friendly operations. The specifications set strict requirements for safety, risk prevention and environmental protection.

The authorisation will have an initial duration of one year, with the possibility of automatic extension, up to a maximum of five years, which will provide stability to the service and ensure its continuity in the medium term.

With this regulation, the APB reaffirms its commitment to the efficient and safe provision of essential commercial services, contributing to the smooth operation of the ports, the competitiveness of the maritime sector and sustainable port activity in the Balearic Islands.

The APB supports renewing the agreement for a more sustainable cruise ship model in Palma

The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) endorses a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Government of the Balearic Islands, Palma City Council and the main companies in the cruise sector, which builds on the existing institutional and sectoral collaboration framework to ensure the balanced and sustainable development of this activity in the port of Palma.

The agreement represents the continuation and updating of the commitment signed in 2022, a milestone that positioned the Balearic Islands as a benchmark in the responsible regulation of cruise traffic in the Mediterranean. The renewal of the agreement reaffirms the measures adopted at that time, aimed at organising port calls, optimising port planning and reducing the impact of activity on the city and its surroundings.

In this context, the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, which manages the port system of general interest in the autonomous community, plays an essential role in the implementation, coordination and monitoring of the commitments established. The APB works together with the Balearic Government, Palma City Council and the signatory companies in the planning of port calls and port operations, ensuring compliance with the agreed criteria and facilitating efficient, transparent management in line with the principles of sustainability.

Through this renewal of the agreement, the APB further demonstrates its commitment to promoting a responsible management model that balances the economic activity associated with cruise tourism with environmental protection, quality of life for citizens, and the sustainable development of the Port of Palma.
