The APB (Balearic Islands Port Authority) will start dredging on Monday, October 4, as a part of the construction project that has been under way in the Botafoc area in the port of Ibiza since last May. The dredger is now en route to the port of Ibiza from the Portuguese town of Portimao and is expected to arrive in the capital of Ibiza on Sunday afternoon.

The name of the dredger which will perform the work is the Gefion R. This mobile suction dredger digs up by horizontal layers, according to the requirements of the Environmental Impact Statement and Insular d'Ordenació Comissió del Territori, Urbanisme i Patrimoni Historicoartístic (CIOTUPHA). The disposal of dredged material will take place in a previously studied and authorized location, twenty three kilometers from the port of Ibiza and approximately 300 meters deep.

During the dredging, and according to the Environmental Impact Statement, an archaeologist will be present to supervise the work in order to detect the possible presence of any archaeological remains.

The predicted time for completion is five months. It will dredge an estimated 480,000 cubic meters of material classified as Class I, meaning that its chemical effects and / or biochemical reactions on marine flora and fauna are zero or almost negligible, according to recommendations by CEDEX for management of dredged material.

The APB announced from the beginning that the work on the Botafoc docks could be followed via the Internet. For this, they created the site www.ambientalmuellebotafocibiza.com, which provides access to descriptions of the project, environmental management and graphic documentation of the work, as well as other information.
