The Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) has today presented to all citizens the participatory process for the design of the new South Bank of the port of Mahón, an initiative that seeks to collectively define the future of the seafront between Colàrsega and Cala Figuera.
During the event, the APB also unveiled the process website - https://portmaohoritzo2030.com/ -, a digital space that will allow the general public to find out about the project, learn about the work phases and make contributions that will directly contribute to the project design.
The process, which began last September with meetings with the local institutions (Menorca Island Council, Mahón city council and Es Castell town council) and the commercial sector of the port, will run until the end of the year with the slogan 'The port you want'.
The main aim of this initiative is to listen, gather proposals and build consensus with the various stakeholders involved - residents, traders, social entities, professionals and public institutions - in order to jointly define the future of the South Bank. The conclusions obtained will be directly integrated into the design of the preliminary project, guaranteeing a shared solution suited to the region's real needs.
Open and transparent participation
The public phase of the process starts today with the activation of the website and the presentation of the calendar of face-to-face meetings. The participatory workshops, to be held on 28 and 29 November, will be divided into four thematic areas: mobility and logistics, economic and social boost, residents and business owners, andsustainability. These sessions will allow the general public to debate and contribute ideas on the uses, facilities and priorities of the seafront, thus helping to define a more integrated, accessible and sustainable model for the South Bank.
This initiative is part of the 'Port Maó, Horitzó 2030' strategy, with which the APB reaffirms its commitment to an inclusive, sustainable and people-centred urban transformation, based on transparency, collaboration and dialogue with Menorcan society.
A new waterfront for a friendlier and more sustainable city
The redesign of the South Bank aims to recover space for pedestrians, reduce the prominence of road traffic and promote friendlier mobility. A new cycle lane and an electric public transport system are planned to connect the future Cala Figuera car park with the Cós Nou passenger terminal.
It is also planned to expand the green space, add quality street furniture and create new recreational areas designed for active and continuous use throughout the year.
The port of Mahón is thus preparing to become better integrated into the city, more accessible to all and aligned with the values of social cohesion, environmental sustainability and economic development.
